In 2016, five people in Huntington, Oregon established Burnt River Farms. Huntington, located at the extreme western edge of the Treasure Valley in eastern Oregon, is a quaint little town. Since it is a high desert with low precipitation and jet silt loam soil, Huntington is an ideal place to grow cannabis. The climate and elevation of the Treasure Valley are strikingly similar to those of Central Asia, around modern-day Afghanistan, where cannabis is believed to have originated.
The crew at Burnt River Farms got to work immediately after discovering an ideal spot for a cannabis farm. The first six months were spent preparing the land for planting by clearing it and constructing the soil. The first few years were dedicated to laying the groundwork for what would become the backbone of the organization.
As a first step toward establishing a long-term, self-sufficient growing operation, they tapped into the local power grid and water supply and constructed drying sheds and greenhouses to cultivate their world-famous cannabis strains in optimal conditions.

Recreational & Medicinal Finds
There’s no hiding the fact that Colorado legalized marijuana for medical purposes and then for recreational use. If you are over the age of 21, you can legally purchase cannabis products in the state for recreational or medical use. Stop by one of these three dispensaries in Idaho Springs to get a feel for the variety of weed on offer and the practical effects of legalization.
Marijuana had its first restrictions put in place by the law in the early 20th century. The temperance movement that led to Prohibition in the 1920s coincided with the passing of laws restricting the sale and use of marijuana. Though alcoholic beverages were reinstated to their former legal status, cannabis regulations increased to the point where the sale of the drug (and even possession) was classified as a felony.
In the 1960s and 1970s, when the “hippie” movement was at its height, public opinion began to change in favor of marijuana. Marijuana possession and use were gradually decriminalized and eventually made legal in Colorado throughout the rest of the twentieth century. Colorado’s state constitution officially recognized the therapeutic value of marijuana in the year 2000.
This paved the way for the proliferation of medical marijuana dispensaries across the state. In 2012, lawmakers approved full medical and recreational cannabis legalization for adults over the age of 21. Visitors and residents alike can now legally buy and use cannabis for recreational purposes.
There is a wealth of evidence suggesting that the expansion of the dispensary industry and the legalization of cannabis have boosted tourism earnings. Many tourists from neighboring states that have not yet legalized marijuana will still visit beautiful Colorado and, while there, will likely buy some cannabis product or another, boosting the state’s economy and providing tax revenue for the government.
