FedEx
FedEx SameDay is FedEx’s door-to-door service for urgent packages. For packages weighing more than 150 pounds, the logistics mammoth provides SameDay Freight services.

In the first half of 2019, FedEx Freight will test out its “FedEx Freight Direct” last-mile delivery service in five different markets: Dallas/Fort Worth, Atlanta, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Omaha. Drivers will deliver packages to the front door as part of the “standard” service, while those who pay extra for “white glove” service will have their packages brought directly to the room of their choice, the boxes unpacked, and any necessary products assembled.
UPS
UPS’s high-volume retail partners, such as Macy’s and Walmart, were not happy with the company during the 2017 holiday season because of its inability to deliver packages to customers on time due to unexpectedly high volumes. UPS is under increasing pressure to provide faster service as Amazon’s shadow grows larger.

UPS Express Critical offers several expedited delivery options, including same-day and urgent delivery, in addition to the standard UPS ground and 2-day shipping options. Depending on the sender’s requirements, they can choose between various shipping methods such as air, surface, charter, hand carry, international, secure, inside precision, and value-added services.
XPO
XPO Logistics, with headquarters in Greenwich, Connecticut, operates more than 1,500 branches in 32 countries. Its acquisition of UX Logistics in 2015 increased its network of truck brokerage, expedited transportation, intermodal, technology-enabled contract logistics, and freight forwarding, all of which contributed to a successful second quarter of 2018.
The same-day courier services in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut areas are available 24 hours a day, 364 days a year through XPO. XPO’s uniformed courier service offers next-day, same-day, and scheduled delivery windows, as well as a fleet of vehicles (routed and scheduled). XPO provides tailored engineering solutions, API/EDI connectivity for retail and e-commerce clients, and devoted account managers to businesses using their courier services.
USPS
Even though the Postal Service isn’t exactly lightning fast, they do guarantee overnight delivery on all Priority Mail Express packages if they’re sent before 3 p.m. (or earlier, if available, and at an additional charge).
Unless the sender uses the USPS-provided Priority Mail Express Flat Rate packaging (which begins at $24.70), Priority Mail Express prices are determined by the weight of the item (up to 70 lbs.) and the distance it must travel.

Delivering “for business mailers and end-consumers alike” with intelligent scanning and documentation, real-time tracking, predictive delivery times, dynamic routing, and delivery performance analytics, this suite of last-mile solutions is designed to make shipping as transparent and efficient as possible.
Walmart
Walmart has been making steady strides in the realm of grocery delivery, even testing out self-driving vehicles in a few test markets. Customers can choose to have their groceries delivered the same day for a $9.95 flat rate, or they can pick them up at a Walmart store for free. The minimum order for same-day groceries is $30. Customers can schedule an online order for in-store pickup and then have Walmart staff do their shopping and load their cars at the designated time.
Customers can use the Walmart app to monitor the progress of their orders, find out when they’re expected to arrive, and even save money by picking up their purchases at a discounted price.
Last but not least, Walmart is also working on a blockchain-based system that would enable delivery drones to exchange information, further reducing delivery times and costs.
Amazon
As a result of its size, innovation, and high level of consumer trust, Amazon is the greatest near-term threat to UPS and FedEx’s duopoly. As the e-commerce giant continues to expand its logistics infrastructure and delivery network, shipping costs are rising rapidly and now account for more than 10% of Amazon’s total operating expenses.
Recently, the retail giant has made significant strides in logistics through initiatives like its “Shipping with Amazon” third-party solution, its provision of overhead cost incentives for independent contractors to launch logistics companies to make deliveries on Amazon’s behalf, its acquisition of PillPack for prescription delivery, and its development of autonomous drone prototypes and architecture in its Project Wing.
It is common knowledge among Prime members that the company offers free two-day shipping and on-demand same-day delivery service, Prime Now, which promises free one- and two-hour deliveries. Amazon Prime Now customers have had access to Amazon Flex crowdsourced delivery, which allows the company to expand its same-day and last-mile capabilities, since 2015. Because the app is available to anyone with a car (except in certain areas that do not allow commercial bicycles), it is especially appealing to people who drive for ridesharing services but are uncomfortable with having total strangers in their vehicles.
Anyone over the age of 21 with a smartphone, a car, and a driver’s license can download the app and set their availability to begin making deliveries, whether they start at a restaurant, a store, or an Amazon fulfillment center. The GPS and camera on the driver’s smartphone are used to scan packages and provide driving directions. Delivery people get paid $18-25 an hour, depending on how quickly they can deliver packages, and it’s all done digitally through the app’s digital wallet.
