Since September 1983, Strafford Self Drive has provided high-quality self-drive car rentals throughout the United Kingdom. Years ago, it began in the back of a grocer’s shop, doing van hire from Hove in East Sussex. The first year, up to 1984, saw rapid growth in its vehicle rental market, with the addition of car rental and minibus rental to supplement the already popular core fleet.
Strafford Rent a Van purchased its first brand new vehicle, a single Ford Fiesta with registration number B440 GAP, from Endeavour Motor Company on August 1, 1984, for £2,487.00. A few months later, a new 15-seat Renault Minibus and a new Renault 1-ton Trafic van were added. This was high finance all those years ago.
Several additional locations or service hubs were established by Strafford Self Drive over the next two decades. The opening of a new head office on Hove seafront, East Sussex, in 1986 involved the demolition of a former Texaco petrol station forecourt, the construction of a new purpose-built reception area, and the installation of custom-designed computer software known as ‘Easyhire,’ which was likely the first of its kind. All of this was done to prepare for future growth. The headquarters were relocated from this location to a much larger 1-acre site in the heart of Brighton in 1991. The former Hove seafront site was given to Churchfields vehicle hire, who then gave it to Enterprise Rent a Car, which is still there today.
Today, Strafford Self Drive receives new vehicles on a regular basis through its membership in the United Rental System, which is possibly the largest rental group in the UK, operating in excess of 60,000 vehicles, as well as disposing of near-new ex-rental vehicles to the general public, business, and trade buyers, all to ensure that when you rent from Strafford, you will always get a new or near new low mileage vehicle.
