Article Cirrus Briar Gray Sofa

Our designers also mentioned Article’s Cirrus sofa twice. Allison Whitt of Design X Interiors, a hospitality design business in San Diego, favours the grey fabric version above (also available in ivory), while Venturo prefers it in green velvet (which costs $100 more; the velvet is also available in grey, navy, and “pacific” blue). “It has just enough detail to anchor a room without weighing it down,” says Whitt of the sofa, which is stylish, comfy, and multifunctional. According to Ventura, “this stylish, tufted style adds a sumptuous touch to any decor without the expensive price tag.”

Aside from the tufting, the sofa has a back and arms that are the same height, giving it a geometric and streamlined appearance. Whitt also praises its “generous depth,” describing it as “a great backdrop for individual touches like as pillows and a throw.” Venturo says that it may be dressed up or down and still appear professional. “The construction stands up to business use,” says Whitt, “which means this is a couch you won’t need to replace anytime soon.”

Taupe Tufted Nail Head Myles Sofa

If you like the appearance of the Cirrus sofa but want to pay less, Floyd recommends the similar Myles sofa from World Market. She described it as a “stately garment” that is also very comfy. It has the same tuxedo silhouette (arms and back are the same height) and tufting on the seat, back, and sides as the Cirrus. However, the slightly larger frame and the nail heads running up the arms give it a more classic feel.

Joss & Main Kaiden 86

This three-seater from Joss & Main is similar to Article’s Sven (but less expensive and longer) and comes highly recommended by Decorilla designer Devin Shaffer, who deems it “beautiful.” It’s made of solid eucalyptus wood and faux-leather in a honey-tan colour, with a tufted seat and back and matching bolster pillows (like the Sven).

Crate & Barrel Skylar Apartment Sofa

Chanae Richards, designer and CEO of Philadelphia-based lr interiors, suggests adding a subtle pattern to your room with something like this black-and-white sofa from Crate & Barrel, which she says is excellent for a tiny apartment. “If you have white walls and are hesitant to add a bright color through paint or art, this is your chance to experiment with a pattern without it being overpowering,” she explains. Its streamlined silhouette and thin, polished metal legs add a touch of subtle elegance.

Article Mirage Yarrow Gold Sofa

Another Article sofa recommended by two of our panellists is the Mirage sofa in “rich gold velvet.” Meghan Noyes appreciates how the “delicate slope in the armrest” distinguishes it from other modern sofa forms. Emerie Forehand of Decorist thinks it’s “very chic” and enjoys how the velvet gives it a vintage touch. She especially enjoys the tapering legs’ detail. It’s also available in a blush pink color for the same price.

AllModern Kelly Sofa

For something even more dramatic, Shaffer recommends AllModern’s updated version of a Victorian “fainting couch.” He adores the “sweeping design” of the 86-inch sofa, as well as the built-in ottoman and splayed legs. In addition to this deep blue, it is also available in silver champagne velvet, black, and navy.

CB2 Tufo Tufted Daybed

A daybed, while not exactly a sofa, may be just as comfy — and adaptable — according to Richards. She is particularly fond of Tufo’s textured fabric and robust frame.

Chamberlin Velvet Sofa

According to Forehand, who likes its “vintage look” and adds that it comes at a great price for a made-to-order sofa, this is a more streamlined, velvet three-seater that’s no less appealing. It costs a little under $1,000 and comes in seven jewel-toned colours that she describes as “creating a focal point in any room.”

Modway Remark

According to designer Josh Greene, this mid-century modern sofa appears “like you might have stumbled upon it during a trip to Copenhagen.” And at $600, he feels the pricing is unbeatable, “, particularly for the style.” It’s a great statement piece with the tufting on the back, flared arms, and splayed wooden legs. It’s also available in beige, grey with colourful buttons on the tufting, light grey, teal, and wheatgrass, in addition to the blue shown, at slightly various pricing ranges.

Modway Engage Right Arm Loveseat

Another Modway mid-century modern-inspired piece that interior designer Vicente Wolf describes as a cheap alternative that “fits well paired with higher-priced pieces.” It has “solid seats with considerable width,” which he finds pleasant. It can also function as a divan or a daybed with just one armrest for more casual seating. This one is also available in a variety of colourways, including navy, beige, dark grey, teal, and wheatgrass – all at varying pricing.

Skyline Furniture Doyer Linen Armless Chair

Floyd adds the Doyer line is “ideal because it is modular, so you can choose precisely how many parts you want to construct your sofa, from a two-piece to a five-piece,” if you’re furnishing a uniquely shaped or super-tiny area. “This sofa is one of my favourites because of its adaptability,” she says of the linen-viscose blend upholstery. While the smallest ready-to-order configuration is a three-piece couch (which costs more than $1,000), you could theoretically combine two of these armless chairs to make a love seat for less than $1,000 — or a corner chair and an armless chair to make an open-ended sofa for just a hair more than $1,000.

The Floyd Sofa

While this two-seater from Detroit-based furniture firm Floyd is technically more than $1,000, Richards believes it’s still a wonderful deal, and the brand’s price points “continue to be impressive when considering their craftsmanship and beauty.” “Their customer service is top-notch,” she adds. It’s also an excellent choice if you want something a little more industrial. It also comes flat-packed, making delivery a breeze. While the two-seater is 60 inches wide, the sofa is also available as a three-seater or three-seater with chaise for $1,295 and $1,695, respectively.

Ivory Feather Filled Brynn Sofa

Two of our designers, Forehand and Floyd, recommend the Brynn couch for customers who prefer more classically fashioned seating. Forehand describes it as “more conventional, with the slipcover style.” She adds that the feather-filled cushions make it cosy — “like a giant comfy bed” (that also happens to be reversible). Floyd likes it because it reminds her of Restoration Hardware’s (much more expensive) Cloud sofa collection but at a quarter of the price. She concurs that it is quite comfy and like its “casual, laid-back vibe.”

West Elm Harris Sofa

The Harris, which Venturo recommends, has a boxy form similar to the Brynn above, but with more defined cushions. She considers it to be one of her most adaptable options. Venturo describes it as a “neutral object that fits readily into any setting,” from a modern flat to one with a more farmhouse feel. She attributes this to the sofa’s “clean, modern lines and ageless no-fuss design.” It’s also pleasant and functional, with reversible cushions and replaceable coverings for easy cleaning. Venturo states that it finds the “perfect mix between fitted and comfy,” and that it can be customized with dozens of fabric combinations as well as a deep-seat design ideal for resting. Depending on the fabric, the 66-inch model starts at $899.

Ikea Ektorp Sofa

Designer Ryan White recommends the Ikea Ektorp for a less-priced but equally adaptable sofa. “I just think nice and cosy when I see this sofa,” he says. The best feature, he says, is that it comes with an easy-to-remove covering that you can just throw in the washing machine — or swap out for an entirely different look. He mentions that it is equally suitable for someone just out of college as it is for a family with little children. It is available in a variety of colours and price points in addition to grey. The sofa, for example, is available in white for $499 or beige for $399.
